Clifford’s Tower was the keep of York Castle and is the most substantial remaining building of that now-vanished stronghold of English monarchs. The castle was first built by William the Conqueror 950 years ago to dominate the greatest city in the North. The keep, now called Clifford’s Tower, was begun about 180 years later and has stood over the city of York ever since.
Between November 2020 and spring 2022 English Heritage undertook a major project at the site to protect its historic fabric and to enhance visitors’ understanding and enjoyment of it. The project included specialist care of parts of the tower that have been exposed to the elements since an explosion and fire in 1684 reduced it to a shell. The team repaired and repointed the historic stonework, repaired the roof over the chapel, and conserved the stone plaques above the entrance door which bear the coats of arms of Charles I and Henry Clifford, 5th Earl of Cumberland, after whose family the tower came to be named.
Alongside the vital conservation work, we have made a number of additions and improvements to the site to help visitors reach previously inaccessible areas and to better tell the story of this remarkable place.
