New from English Heritage Guidebooks
Title: Gainsborough Old Hall
Author: Kevin Booth
Gainsborough Old Hall is an entirely new guidebook for English Heritage, the first of ours for the site, which we took over the care of from Lincolnshire County Council in 2020.
The Hall is situated at the heart of the market town of Gainsborough, on the banks of the Trent. It is a remarkable survival of a late medieval manor house, with a superb timber-roofed open hall and enormous medieval kitchen: two of its striking survivals. It was built by the ambitious soldier Thomas Burgh and both he and his heirs succeeded in switching loyalties as required during the violent changes of rule that constituted the Wars of the Roses and continued to flourish during the reign of Henry VIII.
Under Elizabeth I the last Lord Burgh sold the now-deteriorating manor to the London merchant William Hickman. It remained with the Hickman, and subsequently the Hickman Bacon, family right up until 1970, when it was transferred into the care of the State. After a comprehensive project of conservation and interpretation the Hall is once again open to the public, with a brand new café in its 15th-century east range.
