Guidebook: St Peter's Church, Barton on Humber
St Peter’s is one of the most celebrated parish churches in England. For almost 200 years it has been recognised as a classic example of Anglo-Saxon church architecture, principally on account of its extraordinary tower, which dates from about AD 1000. More recently, its fame has spread as a result of an intense programme of archaeological investigation carried out between 1878 and 1984. This unravelled the history of the church, revealing how it was rebuilt and enlarged several times.
As part of the research more than 2,750 burials were investigated. Ranging in date from the 10th to the mid 19th centuries, they provide the largest sample of skeletons for medical study yet available from any English church site and present a portrait of the community over an entire millennium.
The throroughness of the excavation and research have already marked the project out as a landmark in church archaeology. The results of these many years of study are summarised in this guide.
