Scenically placed beside the river Severn in Shropshire, the ruins of Buildwas Abbey are counted among the most important Cistercian remains in England – a textbook example of the order’s early architectural style. Initially founded for the Savigniac congregation in 1135, Buildwas was absorbed into the Cistercian community in 1147. Monastic life flourished here until the abbey was suppressed in 1536.
This beautifully present guidebook conducts the visitor on a tour, presenting the abbey as the living space in which the Cistercian brothers carried out their daily round of pious observance.
Although never a particularly wealthy house, Buildwas was the home of a remarkable library from which over 40 books survive.
