Rushton Triangular Lodge, one of the most extraordinary buildings in Britain, was built in the 1590s by Sir Thomas Tresham, an Elizabethan knight and landowner. Although fiercely loyal to the queen as head of state, he was imprisoned for his Roman Catholic beliefs, to which this building is a testament. It is dominated by references to the number three, symbolic of the Holy Trinity: it has three storeys and three walls, each 33 feet long and with three windows and three gables.
This guidebook discusses the fascinating history of the Lodge and its builder, and provides a lively account of the turbulent times in which Sir Thomas lived.
