The Roman Scutum (meaning shield) formed part of the standard equipment issued to the Roman Legionary. By the time of the invasion of Britain by Emperor Claudius in AD 43 this style of scutum (there have been other earlier designs) was becoming more widespread but was not yet the standard pattern. The Scutum provided excellent protection against missile attacks, especially when used in the testudo (Latin for tortoise) formation. Although no complete Scuta have ever been found in the UK (wood decomposes easily), the metal fittings from some shields have survived - there are some particularly nice examples in the British Museum.
This Scutum Shield is a high quality replica and is constructed from linen covered wood and hand painted like the originals. It features a brass boss in the centre and reinforcing strips around the edges.
